South Central crowns new top barista

Lorenzo Perkins of Caffe Medici in Austin, Texas, took the top prize Sunday at the 2009-2010 South Central Regional Barista Competition, earning an automatic berth in the semifinals of April’s United States Barista Championship in Anaheim, Calif. Aaron Blanco of Brown Coffee Company in San Antonio and Tyler Wells of Frank in Austin finished second and third, respectively. Perkins bested a field of 24 competitors at the event, which was hosted by Caffe Medici, Cuvee Coffee Roasters and Waterfall Gourmet Beverages.
