PORTLAND, ORE.—With “Chariots of Fire” blasting over the P.A. and the crowd roaring, Katie Carguilo accepted the U.S. Barista Championship trophy at an electric Oregon Convention Center on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Carguilo works in customer support at the New York City offices of Counter Culture Coffee. A competition veteran with two regional wins under her belt, Carguilo will now represent the United States at the World Barista Championship in Vienna, taking place June 12-15.
Also nabbing a national win on Sunday was Andy Sprenger, who won the U.S. Brewers Cup for the second-straight year. (It launched last year, making him the only person to hold the title.) Sprenger, 39, is the head roaster at Ceremony Coffee Roasters in Annapolis, Md., and will also move on to Vienna to compete in the World Brewers Cup.
