A coffee lover learns from the ground up
This week’s video spotlight goes to the Behind the Beans YouTube channel, which features a series of videos focusing on coffee at origin.
The project is the creation of Jennifer Jacobs, brand manager at Irvine, Calif.-based Portola Handcrafted Coffee Roasters, who made the videos last year while new to the industry and touring coffee-producing countries. “I spent about a year on three different farms,” she says. “I thought the best way, at least for me, to start exploring [coffee] was to learn about the product from the ground up, literally.”
She says she originally hadn’t intended to document the process, but soon realized she had a unique perspective—and a lot of free time. “The channel mainly stemmed from a desire to teach people all the amazing things I had learned, but also out of boredom,” she says. “I was on a very isolated farm in the mountains in Puerto Rico, with very limited means of getting around, so I had to get creative.”
