Intelligentsia set to open Pasadena shop
Posted: Feb 18, 2010
Last June Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea opened its second Los Angeles-area location, a “high-concept” café in Venice Beach that features individual barista stations and bleacher-like concrete tiers for seating. Intelligentsia owner Doug Zell recently revealed to the Los Angeles Times that the Chicago-based roaster/retailer/self-proclaimed-inventor-of-direct-trade is planning to further expand its SoCal presence, opening a Pasadena shop by as early as this summer.
Zell wouldn’t reveal many details about the new location, but don’t expect a typical coffeehouse experience—or a reprise of the Venice model. “Similar DNA,” Zell tells the Times, “but the look and feel is very, very different in a way that hasn't been done in the U.S. yet for a coffeehouse.”
